OUR WORK

Advocacy

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY

Together with the City of Lethbridge and the YMCA we are working on making the bathroom and washroom facilities in the new leisure building meet the diverse needs of Lethbridge residents.

We are also working with the City and City Council to raise awareness about capturing census data that is inclusive of our diverse community. On November 9th, 2015, City Council passed a motion to make recommendations for changes to the gender question on the census. You can see the motion or watch the debate.

We are working with our MLA's on healthcare access, Education and Bill 10. You can read our letter to the Lethbridge School Boards here

Youth

EMPOWERING OUR FUTURE

In light of Bill 10 becoming law in Alberta on June 1st, OUTreach has written an Open Letter to the boards of trustees of school districts in Lethbridge and the surrounding area. The letter addressed the importance of creating and maintaining safe and caring environments for all students and especially for Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ) youth. The letter has been endorsed by a great many organizations and partners in the community and we are grateful for their support. At the time of writing, Lethbridge District 51 Board has responded with this letter. We are still awaiting a response from the other School Board Trustees. We are working with our MLA's to address school safety issues.

In partnership with the Boys and Girls Club and the Lethbridge Public Library, we currently have 2 monthly Community Queer Straight Alliance Groups for youth. You can find more information regarding times and location by going to the upcoming events page

Education

HELP DRIVE CHANGE

Our Community Education Program offers a comprehensive in-service session for organizations across Southern Alberta. The first component of the session focuses on terminology and language; the second focuses on issues related to Southern Alberta and questions brought forward by the organization. For a donation to OUTreach (suggested donation $100/hour, sliding scale available), we are happy to provide this training for your organization. Please contact us at education@outreachsa.ca for more information or to book a session.

Last year, OUTreach was approached by CMARD to provide a myth and fact sheet for the City of Lethbridge. We spent the summer and fall collecting data from both the local LGBTQ community and the Lethbridge community at large. Over the winter, a committee met to collate the data and out of these sessions came the Gender Identity Myth and Facts sheet and the Sexual Orientation Myth and Fact sheet.

In April 2015, we hosted a panel on Gender Expression with cartoonist Sophie Labelle from Montreal, Angela Reid from TESA (Trans Equality Society of Alberta) and local activist Dillon Hargreaves. We are thankful for the sponsors who helped make this event possible: LPIRG, Womanspace, CMARD, University of Lethbridge Institute for Child and Youth Studies, PSAC Prairie Region, ULSU Pride, and the University of Lethbridge.
